of Australia co-operative story.
As farmers, we share a common set of values when it comes to how we care for our land, treat our animals, and in general, how we live our lives in the community. We refer to this as our 'organic ethos'.
To be Certified Organic, we follow a strict set of standards but our organic ethos is about much more than these things. It is concerned with sustainability in the broader sense – sustaining not just the land, but also communities and families in general. It is also about ethics and maintaining the highest professional standards.
We sum it all up by saying we're about: Family Farms, Healthy Soil, Happy Cows… Remarkable Milk.
We know that people are drawn to organic food for a variety of reasons, ranging from superior taste through to concerns about contamination and environmental sustainability.
One thing is for sure, if you compare a cup of our milk alongside any other supermarket milk, you'll be amazed just how different the milks taste. We're not just making it up when we say our milk is remarkable!
All our farms, processors and products are Certified Organic. This means they are audited and comply with a set of strict regulations known as National Organic standards which define what we can and can't do.
Being Certified Organic
Organic certification is intended to assure product credibility, product quality and to develop markets.
Organic Certification consists of annual farm audits. ODFA helps dairy farmers with processed and procedures associated with obtaining and maintaining organic certification.
The time is actually takes to gain full organic certification depends on your previous farming practices. Typically the process is three years. This could be reduced is no prohibited inputs have been applied to the farm.
There are a number of Organic certifying bodies in Australia with whom our suppliers use to provide certification. ODFA field staff can provide a complete list of these certifying bodies.
Farming Organically With Us
Organic farming involves much more than choosing not to use synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics and hormones.
Organic production is a holistic system designed to optimise the productivity and fitness of diverse communities within the
agro-ecosystem, including soil organisms, plants, livestock and people. Organic farming systems aim to develop enterprises that are sustainable and harmonious with the environment.
The organic farming environment is never static. The organic dairy farmer is always observing, listening and documenting what is happening with their plants, their soil, their environment and their livestock. These observations are enhanced with shared knowledge across a supportive network such as ODFA.
Whether new to organic farming or a pioneer that has been farming for more than 30 years, there is always something new to be learned. Building your knowledge and understanding for organic farming is an ongoing journey, that’s what makes organic farming exciting with us at ODFA.
The pathway to becoming an organic farmer is diverse and the reasons for being organic are equally varied. Some of our farmers turned to being organic for health reasons, others for environmental concerns and others are seeking a more natural farming system.
